Find DoFollow, Be DoFollow, Do DoFollow

So we discussed DoFollow earlier this week on The 42nd Estate's blog (you are subscribed, aren't you?) but just to spread the word a bit further, let's check out what we learned.

First up, DoFollow means links on a site get crawled by Google, thus giving the linkee a bit of a boost. Second, many bloggers are behind a DoFollow movement promoting Dofollow as a way to reward valid comments (Prose of a Pol is a DoFollow blog), third The 42nd Estate and My Last Name Means Money both feature commentluv and are DoFollow blogs, giving you a great place to get some backlinks from PR3 and PR2 blogs. Finally, don't forget to list your DoFollow blog (if you do Dofollow) at Justin Wright's DoFollow Blog Directory.

There you have it folks. Do you DoFollow? If you do, make sure to sign up on Justin's blog and also leave a comment here letting me know.

Check in tomorrow for a hilarious video from The Onion.

Nice article. Does comment luv automatically use do follow?

Thanks Dereck. As far as I know commentluv defaults to whatever the blog has set for comments. Here dofollow is enabled on comments so the commentluv links are dofollow.

It’s nice to see so many people utilizing the DoFollow strategy. I think it helps tremendously when it comes to building backlinks. The only thing I have begun to wonder, is if Google stops passing out PageRank on blog posts due to so many outgoing links. Then again, PageRank isn’t as important as it used to be…

I agree. Internet in about exchanging link and finding information this way. Otherwise we would have to search in Google and Yahoo for everything which is sometimes hard with so many websites.

Adam Pieniazek November 17, 2008 at 12:22 am

Yeah, I’m curious about that too Justin. I look at the commentluv plugin being useful to my visitors as it helps provide a little bit of info about the people writing comments, and Google is all about what’s good for the visitor.

Thanks DeeJay and Prevodi. I’d disagree about Google being difficult but link exchanging is literally the backbone of the internet.

I’ve been on a campaign as of late to find high quality dofollow blogs so that I can promote my own site by giving high quality comments.

As a test I made one of my sites nofollow and one dofollow. my DoFollow blog ranks higher and gets mire high quality comments than the other one. True, I get more spam on it but Akismet does a great job of blocking all that for me. All my blogs will be Dofollow!

I’m also new to this dofollow movement and it seems a great idea. Your contributors get a link and the blog owner gets more interest in their site. When my blog’s up and running I’ll be sure to implement it.

Is there any good dofollow apps for macs? Or is everything just for windows right now?

Matt February 5, 2009 at 9:15 pm

I would prefer a dofollo plugin that activates after a certain number of posts. Maybe even one that resets every 30 days. This would encourage people to keep posting.

Tom Volkar / Delightful Work February 23, 2009 at 10:51 am

I’ve been dofollow for about 6 months now and my page rank of 4 hasn’t budged as some say it will. Some comments are very questionable because they are brief and in some cases it’s easy to see that they are only there for the link.

Tom Volkar / Delightful Works last blog post..How To Get On The Right Track

Chris - Free PS3 February 23, 2009 at 3:37 pm

Unfortunately it takes a lot of work Tom but persistence is the key – keep at it and you’ll get there. Your doing well so far though with a PR4. Remember google only updates their PR rating three or four times per year so you may make a decent jump next time they are updated – possible around the end of March. Good luck.

Some of the best plugins for do-follow are available with firefox, like Search status and SEO for Firefox
These plugins work great, they sort do-follow and page ranks

Tony Lee February 26, 2009 at 5:40 pm

I’ve began my own effort in the Dofollow movement as well. In the beginning, I was afraid of receiving mass amounts of spam from visitors, but it’s worked out well. Although I still get an occasional meaningless post, the majority of users offer worthwhile comments that benefit my site. In fact spam has actually dropped!

After Google movement of no-follow. Do-follow blogs have gained quite importance, It is now harder to find bogs with do-follow tag.
But they are good source of back links.

This is a great post! I have recently just been utilizing social media stuff like Twitter to help people find my blog. However, it seems like having a high page rank is even important. I’m still learning all this stuff but hopefully I can figure things out!

Great job! Keep up the good posts!

Honestly Yu-kai, I’ve found the best method is to publish great content and people will find it one way or the other. Having said that, publishing great content and marketing it well is a win-win.

Good luck in your endeavors and let me know if I can help! Perhaps you’d be interested in a review of your blog at OTIBR.com?

Adam Pieniazek March 22, 2009 at 3:00 pm

Puneet, dofollow is a great tool to reward comments, it’s a bit more work moderating comments but it’s worth it.

Syed Taha March 21, 2009 at 11:18 am

can someone tell me how to check if my blog is dofollow?

Syed Taha´s last blog post..Outsourcing web content to a professional writer

Adam Pieniazek March 21, 2009 at 10:12 pm

Great questions Syed. By default all wordpress blogs are nofollow. If you use Firefox then you can install an add-on called Quirk SearchStatus which will actually highlight all nofollow links on a web page. It’s a very handy tool not just for checking your own site but also seeing whether a blog that claims to be dofollow actually is dofollow.

I’m not sure if there’s similar tools for other browsers, I’m sure there is. If you let me know what browser you use I can check. Otherwise, just install Search Status in Firefox and you’ll be all set. It also lists the PageRank and Alexa rank of whatever site you are viewing so it’s a very handy tool.

Do Follow is a great characteristic for complete bloggers to have. I think it makes more incentive for people to position relevant discussions instead of spamming. This way whatever parties experience something in return, the posting gets a useful backlink and the blogger makes more such discussion.

Flirt April 18, 2009 at 4:59 am

I think all shold have dofllow is there any tools out there for which you can check whether they allow it.

Chris - Free PS3 April 18, 2009 at 8:04 pm

There are various search engines that deal with do follow blogs but these generally depend on the quality of their database. A good site is dofollowblogs.com which seems to be kept well up-to-date.

George Packard April 20, 2009 at 11:15 am

@Flirt…

You can use a plugin for the Firefox browser called nodofollow.

Adam Pieniazek April 20, 2009 at 6:44 pm

Yup, there’s quite a few nofollow tools for Firefox (it’s one of the big reasons I don’t use Safari 100% of the time). nodofollow and Quirk SearchStatus are two such tools.

Thanks George!
