For far too long we have had to simply wonder am I in Boston, with no definitive answer. But, those dark days are long behind us friends as I’m proud to announce the universe-wide launch of Is It Boston?

The site does one thing and one thing only, tells you if a zip code is in Boston, Massachusetts.

Is It Boston????

ISB is a fun little side project after reading a few comments from Boston’s Aquapacolypse where people wondered and debated whether places like Brighton, Charlestown, and Cambridge are in Boston [hint, two of them are]. It’s also a solution to a long standing gripe amongst all Bostonians, people saying they live in or are from Boston when they are not.

Personally, after spending a few years in California and North Carolina, I understand why someone from Newton says he’s from Boston and I’ve grown OK with it. But what does bother me is when people tell me, a Boston resident of 23 years, that my home neighborhood Dorchester is not part of Boston. Even showing a letter addressed to Boston, MA that arrived in my Dorchester home wasn’t enough so Is It Boston strives to be the definite source on whether a place is or isn’t in Boston!

Getting the data

Getting the data turned out to be a bit of a fuzzy matter. Thanks to Matt Cutts’ post Fun with zip codes, I got pointed over to the U.S. Census Bureau and their beautifully formatted list of U.S. zip codes.

Alas, their data, while pristinely formatted, wasn’t completely up to date. I then set out to compile my own list and double-check all the zip codes manually against the U.S. Postal Service’s data. If you live in Boston and would like to help the cause, check that list and let me know if your zip code should be there and what neighborhood it’s a part of.

Making the site

Once the lists were in place, making the site became a pretty easy venture. We basically take a zip code, check it against the lists and report back the results. If there’s interest, I can put together a tutorial on how I went about it. I’m also considering releasing the source code and cleaned up data so others can make their own Is It Insert_Location_Name_Here.

My proudest bit about the site is it’s size and load time. The home page only has two requests [not counting Analytics scripts] and weighs in at a minuscule 3.7 kb. Load time off The 42nd Estate’s servers averages between 3/10 to 4/10 of a second. I love minimalistic sites and you can’t get much more minimal than that!

Today is ADORE-Chester! day, a celebration of Dorchester, my home neighborhood where I was born, raised, and live in today. There’s many great things about Dorchester, but for today’s article we’ll talk about five of them. For more great points of Dorchester, check out the other blogs participating in ADORE-Chester! Day.

Dorchester’s History

Dorchester is an old place, founded before the City of Boston, filled with historical nuggets and firsts. For instance, did you know Dorchester once literally sprawled over and beyond Greater Boston, coming within just feet of the Rhode Island border?

As noted in my Dorchester Day article for The Dorchester Reporter, Dorchester has staken a claim as the

home of the first free public school in the USA, the first community health center, the first settlement in Suffolk County, and the first government run by town hall meetings

Dorchester’s Architecture

Modern and centuries old structures populate Dorchester’s landscape. The William Clapp house was built in 1806, the James Blake house is even older built in 1650. And modern buildings are being built as we speak, with the most recent in progress development being the the new Carpenters Center on Dorchester Avenue overlooking I-93. A much needed modern building in a location that makes for a much more inviting welcome into Dorchester coming into the neighborhood from the city.

Dorchester’s Diversity

Young and old, rich and poor, people of nearly all nationalities fill the streets of Dorchester. Our diversity is one of our strongest strengths, and creates a populace that learns from and leans on each other, rather than viewing people as different.

The Polish Triangle

Well, I am a Polish-American (born in the U.S.A., by two Polish-born parents), so how could I not list The Polish Triangle, an officially recognized area of Boston that is filled with Polish culture and history. We’ve got great restaurants, friendly neighbors, and a giant pear. A win for all.

Dot Bike

As a Boston bicyclist, I love that the Dorchester bicycle community is strong and big. Walking, biking, or driving around Dorchester you can spot bicyclists all over the place. The simple bicycle is a great example of how Dorchester is an economical, efficient, and self-powered place where independence is valued and pride in oneself and one’s area is strong.

Leonard Nimoy

A bonus point! At the behest of my step-brother, I must add the bonus point that Leonard Nimoy was born in Dorchester. The definitive star trekker began his star tripping in the best neighborhood in Boston, Dot.

Though blogging and social media are quite old now, many people still doubt it’s power.

Well, what if I told you that a blog post here may have encouraged a Boston City Councillor and Mayoral Candidate to not only re-vamp their strategy, but to do so in just one day?

Would you then begin to appreciate how social media (and that includes blogging) breaks down communication barriers and helps important issues bubble to the top and get fixed quickly?

Michael Flaherty Talks To Us, Not At Us

Because that might be the situation; just one day after my article from last week about how Michael Flaherty’s campaign failed to engage on Twitter, his Twitter stream began to become populated with @replies, RT’s and followees.

To jog your memory a bit, last week I wrote that:

When your Twitter stream has nothing but updates from you, meaning zero replies, zero ReTweets, zero interaction, and you’re following zero people, you fail. You come across as an automated yes-bot.

It was a swipe at the Flaherty Twitter stream, which as of that article was following zero people and was broadcasting instead of communicating. Then, just one day later @mffboston09 began talking to us, instead of talking at us. And today, we see the Twitter handle following 240 people, talking to those people, and RTing others.

Take a look at the new and improved Twitter stream from Michael Flaherty:

Michael Flaherty, now engaging on Twitter

Much better! Do note that now that he/his team is engaging with us I’m now following him.

Did we sway a Boston mayoral candidate?

When discussing the power of blogs to enact quick change in the political scene, we don’t need to see yes we can, instead we can proclaim yes we did! Sure, this revamping of Michael Flaherty’s Twitter profile may have been a pure coincidence and my blog post had nothing to do with it, but I think it played some role, even if it just re-affirmed to the campaign team that they needed to communicate, not broadcast.

Note: After writing this post, Michael Flaherty’s Twitter profile responded to my inquiry and stated my article had nothing to do with the change in approach.

But more importantly, it wasn’t just this blog post. It was you, the people who ReTweeted the post, shared it on Google Reader and linked to it. Thanks to all of you!

While we’re at it, let’s send some commendations to Michael Flaherty and his campaign team for listening, improving, and engaging. The real moral of the story is that none of us are perfect. If we approach social media with an open mind, we can all learn how to improve ourselves and connect with the people around us better.

Whether my post and your awareness helped drive this change or not, the change is a good thing and that’s what really matters. It’s a good thing for the City of Boston and its residents to have our mayor and mayoral candidates utilizing social media to communicate with Bostonians. Let’s hope this change is a small sign of things to come.

Thanks to jungledrumsonline for the photo.

Here’s the problem with comparing yourself to an iPhone, if you don’t back it up by actually utilizing new technologies well, you come off as insincere and gimmicky. That’s the spot Michael Flaherty, one of the candidates for Mayor of the City of Boston, has placed himself in, at least in this blogger’s eyes.

This iPhone Can’t Tweet

Most Bostonians are familiar with his campaign, he’s got signs and advertisements everywhere comparing the incumbent Mayor Menino to old technologies and himself to new technologies. Like the picture above, where Meninino is an old-school blocky cell-phone from the 80′s, while Flaherty is a slick new iPhone.

It’s a really slick marketing campaign, but when you don’t back it up, you fail. It makes you come off as all talk and no walk, and worse makes your campaign seem disorganized and discordant. When you say you are new technology, but then fail to utilize new technology effectively, your proposed image and actual implementation end up contradicting each other.

How does Michael Flaherty fail?

In numerous ways, but for today’s example we’re going to focus on Twitter, something the “iPhone candidate” should be up to speed on, right? I mean, they do sort of go hand in hand. They’re both the latest hot piece of technology. The iPhone is a portable, handheld internet enabled computer while Twitter is one of, if not the, most popular online social messaging systems. Sure, every Twitter user does not have an iPhone and every iPhone user does not tweet, but the majority of the hardcore users of both likely have at least a base understanding of each other.

Twitter is for Communicating, not Broadcasting

There’s a huge misconception amongst many people that Twitter is for sending out inane updates about what you had for lunch or broadcasting your product to the masses. It is neither. While sending out tweets about your product or food choices can be effective at generating sales and showing your personality, if that’s all you do it shows a clear lack of understanding about the core of Twitter. More importantly, it likely won’t work. There’s exceptions, but for the most part, if you don’t engage no one will listen.

Let me break it down simply, for everyone, Twitter is a communication platform.

Twitter is not a:

billboard

lunch menu

bullhorn

something only web geeks do

It’s actually an immensely simple idea that got out of the way of people and allowed them to communicate quickly, easily, and freely.

When your Twitter stream has nothing but updates from you, meaning zero replies, zero ReTweets, zero interaction, and you’re following zero people, you fail. You come across as an automated yes-bot.

Take a look at Michael Flaherty’s Twitter stream:

Michael Flaherty's Events Calender/Twitter Stream

As you can see it’s basically his events calendar.

Wow Michael, you just got out of a city council meeting, that’s amazing! Thanks for informing us that you’re doing your job!

Let’s Talk, Not Stalk

The problem which Michael’s tweets, is that I don’t care about any of the information there. If I wanted to know where he’ll be, I’d check his web-page and look for an events calendar. Twitter is for communicating, and when used correctly could be a potential revolution in how constituents can interact with their government. When used to broadcast messages one way, it shows a complete failure for even the most basic of understandings about how the system works.

Don’t talk at me, talk to me.

You know what, that last sentence is so absolutely crucial to using Twitter well, and being a good Mayor that I’m going to repeat it and highlight it.

Don’t talk at me, talk to me.

Look, I don’t expect Michael Flaherty to ingrain himself in the Twitter community but I do expect him to bring someone in who gets it and to get advice before just throwing up random content (by the way Michael, if this article hasn’t completely turned you off, I am available for social media consulting sessions).

Now, if Michael didn’t brand himself as a candidate that is an improvement over the incumbent, then I wouldn’t care much. You don’t need to use Twitter, but if you brand yourself as the equivalent of an iPhone and do brand yourself as an improvement over the incumbent, then I would expect you to tweet well.

In this case, Mayor Menino’s Twitter stream is done well. Sure, it’s done by a staff member, but I could care less. If a tweet gets sent that needs the Mayor’s attention, the staff member can relay it on. I’d rather have an intermediary do it well than to have whoever do it poorly.

What’s worse, is that Flaherty doesn’t understand a relatively simple piece of technology like Twitter. What does it mean when the 80′s cell-phone uses a new piece of technology better than the iPhone?

Yelling in my Ear in Real Life

At the Dorchester Day parade, Flaherty’s campaign was the only one that brought a truck out that had a guy inside yelling loudly into a bullhorn:

VOTE FOR MICHAEL FLAHERTY FOR MAYOR OF THE CITY OF BOSTON FOR 2009. MICHAEL FLAHERTY MICHAEL FLAHERTY MICHAEL FLAHERTY

I get it. Your campaign thinks Michael Flaherty is a swell guy, but here’s the thing, it doesn’t matter. Personally I could care less about the candidate, his attributes, his personality and his accomplishments. Frankly it doesn’t matter because at the end of the day, it’s not about the candidate, it’s about the constituents.

Michael Flaherty may be a god amongst men, but what does that mean for me, a citizen of Boston? Whether Flaherty wins or not, we won’t be living in Flaherty land, we’ll still be living in Boston. Whoever wins will not be managing the entire city, their staff will. The direct impact of the person who’ll have the title will be minimal. How he interacts with his staff and how both interact and work with the citizens of Boston will determine how effective the mayor will be.

Someone who talks at me, not to me, does not sound like a team player. Someone who thinks it’s all about him, not about me and the other citizens of Boston, will fail. Someone who doesn’t realize it’s a good idea to ask someone with expertise in a field before diving in sounds like an egomaniac who will refuse to listen to outside ideas. That, to me, is not a mayor, it’s a dictator.

Long-time readers of this blog will know I rag on The Boston Globe a fair amount. Well in today’s post we’ll visit the other side of the coin and talk about a few things the Boston Globe does well. Now, this post won’t be full of praise. Rather, I’ll point out a few areas where the Globe is performing admirably, but also try to offer advice on how they can improve.

Call out Politicians

In my opinion, one of the most important roles of a newspaper is to keep public figures honest. The Globe does that, on occasion, such as when the Globe called out Mayor Menino to push for MBTA reform. I’d love to see the Globe take a more active role in pushing politicians to pursue positive policy change. A great start would be having a section that lists all the politicians, their campaign promises, and what they’ve done to fulfill those promises.

Promote Local Bloggers

As someone who received the Boston Globe bump, I know first hand that the Globe does try and promote the little guys. They could do a better job, by creating an archive of bloggers linked to before (to preserve the link juice), but being featured on the Globe’s homepage is a start and can be a launching point for Boston bloggers. I’ve heard from many other bloggers who wish their local paper had a similar feature, so kudos to the Globe for sharing some of their massive traffic with Boston bloggers who also help drive traffic to the Globe’s site.

Easy to Read Design

I’ve heard from a lot of people that they hate the Boston Globe’s design. Don’t count me as one of those people. For all their faults, in my eyes their web site’s design is not one of them. Sure it’s a bit cluttered, but it’s a newspaper. They have tons of content they want to showcase and in my opinion, their design accomplishes that without completely overwhelming readers. Plus, when you click through to a single article their typography and layout is spot-on and makes for a pleasurable read.

The only change I’d like to see happen is a section that showcases local news. I know the Globe does write about local stories, but they’re often buried out of sight off the homepage. Having a Boston stories section would help the Globe and Bostonians stay in touch with what’s going on in the City of Boston.

Social Media and Community Building

These two areas are places where the Globe gets kudos for effort, but they could stand to improve both areas. A few months back, the Globe rolled out a community feature, where commenters can create a profile describing themselves a little bit. Looking through some comments, I’m not even sure if this feature is still around, but at least they’re trying to give commenters a persistence presence.

An area where the Globe really excels though, is not just using social media to promote their articles, but more so using social media to promote news within their articles. During the MBTA crash at Government Center, the Globe had a running Twitterstream that showed the latest tweets coming in about the crash. Knowing that they couldn’t possibly match the real-time tweets, the Globe reported as much as they could and also gave readers the option to view the stream to get up to the minute updates.

It’s great to see the Globe reach out to the community for some citizen journalism, though the un-filtered stream was filled with duplicates and even a few tweets that shouldn’t have been there. It’ll likely never happen, but I would love to see the Globe allow commenters to link to their sites. It would provide a background on the commenter and help drive traffic to good commenters’ sites. And if they use Disqus, any SEO worries could be averted.

Humor

As yesterday’s crossword puzzle shows, the Globe does have a humorous side. OK, sure, one of my main critiques against the Globe is not focusing on the truly important news, but hey, everyone could use a little laugh in their day.

None of these positive aspects of the Boston Globe are perfect, but I feel they’re ahead of the game compared to most mainstream newspapers. Hopefully they’ll take some of the advice here into consideration. Instead of just ragging on the Globe, my efforts going forward will be on ways to improve the paper. Having the best newspaper possible benefits all Bostonians. That doesn’t mean I won’t call out the Globe in the future, but I’ll try to temper it by also offering ways to improve.

What are some areas you think the Globe does well? Where could they improve?

What a sick location, eh?

The Wine Riot staff are really big on ensuring there’s a relaxed atmosphere to their events where you can learn about and enjoy various wines without feeling intimidated. Rather than raving on and on about the great time I had at last April’s Wine Riot, check out some of the reviews from Yelp.

While they haven’t released a full list of the wines that will be in attendance, check out the massive list of wines at last year’s Wine Riot. Wine Riot will be held on September 25th and 26th. Tickets are already on sale, and come with a discount if you order before August 2nd! I’ll be there for sure, will you?

Thanks to jspad for the shot of the Moakley courthouse.

While reading through the sites in my feed reader yesterday, a headline from Universal Hub caught my eye.

Wait, somebody actually reads the comments at the bottom of Globe and Herald articles?

The master of enticing headlines strikes again. Since I’m one of the, apparently, few people who do read the comments at the end of Globe and Herald articles (some of them are actually informative and sometimes downright hilarious), I had to read the whole article.

In it, Adam Gaffin refers to a piece written by Doug Bailey in the Boston Globe. Gaffin notes that Bailey’s main point, that internet comments are often filled with fluff or inane rants, is correct. Gaffin then goes on to point out, correctly, that the Globe and Herald are to blame for the poor comments at both sites:

But you know what, Doug? Your pals at Morrissey Boulevard and Herald Square share the blame. They haven’t set up forums for intelligent discourse on the events of the day. They’ve set up the digital equivalent of blank sheets of paper taped to the wall above the urinals in men’s rooms. Of course people are just going to scribble and rant.

Real community – and the intelligent discussion that goes with it – takes real work. And real community is a two-way street – people react differently when they know somebody is on the other end of the ether. What do you expect is going to happen when people realize there’s no there there? Compare the rantings on your typical news story with either MetaFilter or, locally, the BoMoms forums (so somebody at the Globe does get it).

Absolutely true. The Globe and Herald simply don’t respond to many of the comments written on their sites. They do moderate the comments, so what you see has been approved by someone at the papers and thus they share the blame for the quality of comments posted there.

Comment Moderation

I know that comments are moderated because I’ve written comments on both sites, some get published, some don’t, but they all enter a queue for moderation.

Just a few days ago, I spotted that the Globe made an error while reporting on a fire in South Boston. The error was that the Globe reported the fire happening in Dorchester, most likely because it was on 400 Dorchester Avenue (which extends not only into Southie, but also into the downtown core, past South Station).

After tweeting about the Globe’s mistake (which normally I would write off as simple human error but since the Globe’s headquarters are in Dorchester, you’d think they’d know better) I then proceeded to write a comment on the Globe’s site informing them of their mistake.

Within a few minutes, the Globe started changing the information on their article. At first it was just the headline, then a few minutes later the article body, then a few minutes later the meta title was changed too. Nowhere during that time period, nor now, did my comment appear.

Could it have been sheer coincidence that minutes after posting my comment about their mistake they noticed their error and began fixing it? Sure. More likely, in my opinion, is that the Globe didn’t like the one snarky line I put in the comment stating “you should know better, considering you’re based in Dorchester” and decided to just make the changes and hope no one called them out on it.

If you make a mistake online, don’t try to hide it. It wont’ work since people take screen shots and tons of services store caches of your web pages. Instead, admit the mistake, fix it, and notify your readers of the error and the correction.

But not getting credit for my editing fix isn’t what bugs me, it’s the lack of transparency and communication. The ideal method would have been for the Globe to post my comment, respond to it saying they’ve fixed the mistake, then crossed out the original location and replaced it with the correct one. That way there’s transparency, a paper trail, and the commenter gets rewarded and encouraged to continue commenting.

Before my comment:

To anyone thinking I manipulated these images. Here’s a tweet from the Globe on July 11th marking the fire in Dorchester, then a day later another tweet from the Globe marking the the fire in South Boston.

What really gets me going though, is that the Globe was not the first publication to report on the fire. Other publications had reported on the fire with the correct location hours before the Globe ran their version of the story. A simple Google search, followed up by checking Google Maps would have allowed them to catch the mistake and not require me notifying them via a comment.

Quality Community Leads to Quality Comments

The Boston Globe comments don’t fail because web comments are dumb and vain, they fail because the Globe doesn’t understand web comments. They moderate comments, yet a lot of junk gets through, they don’t respond to comments, and they don’t reward their commenters. Those three conditions combined together add up to comment fail for the Globe.

Bailey believes that removing reader comments from newspapers will strengthen their product:

We know that newspapers made a mistake and devalued their product by giving it away for free on the Internet. Some rebuilding could begin by removing these reader forums and restoring journalism’s dignity.

It’s a downright silly suggestion, as comments provide a venue for readers to add to the article, and as in my case fix the mistakes of the newspapers. Bailey goes on to note that journalists “…work hard gathering information dutifully trying to raise the debate on issues or inform the public on a burning topic…”. So, according to Bailey, the whole point of journalism is to inform and inspire discussion, yet because he doesn’t like the discussions that are happening we should shut off the valve.

That’s ridiculous. It’s not the fault of the comment system that the comments aren’t filled with in-depth discourse, it’s the fault of the comment administrators who don’t respond to comments and decide to post some mis-informative ones while ignoring other informative ones. Don’t blame comments Bailey, blame the Globe and Herald.

You can find plenty of intelligent comments on the web, but as Adam Gaffin noted, it requires hard work to build a community and ensure the comments released through that community are quality. Participating in the discussion after the article is published only serves to strengthen the quality of comments. Otherwise you’re left with a mess of one-way rants and shouts from the article and the comments.

If you haven’t heard yet, the South Street Diner may be forced to close at 2 AM. A major gripe against Boston is the lack of 24 hour restaurants and businesses. The South Street Diner is one of the less than a handful of places where you can sit down and get a hot meal anytime of the day. No, Dunkin’ Donuts doesn’t count (and yes, I do heart Dunkies a lot, but it’s not quite a restaurant).

Though the public hearing on the issue was already held yesterday, you can still show your support for the South Street Diner by sending an e-mail to the City of Boston Licensing Board. For Boston to truly be a world class city, we need businesses that stay open throughout the night. In a city as diverse as Boston, there are a plethora of night owls who should have the ability to sit down and enjoy a hot meal in a restaurant while the rest of the city sleeps.

Below is my letter to the licensing board. If you care about improving Boston’s nightlife, or at least not worsening it, send an e-mail to the board and let your voice be heard!

Dear Mr. Pokaski,

When making your decision on the South Street Diner, please keep in mind the rights of Bostonians to have at least one 24 hour eatery option. While a large majority of the South Street Diner’s patrons are coming from bars, clubs and other establishments, some of the patrons are also students, workers and tourists who visit the South Street Diner as it is nearly the only option for food at any hour.

While we all have a right to peace and quiet, there are some exceptions. When individuals move into a neighborhood, the responsibility of ensuring the local culture fits their needs and personalities is squarely placed upon the individuals.

The four residents who have complained about the noise at the South Street Diner voided any and all rights to peace and quiet when they decided to move in next to the only 24 hour restaurant in Boston.

There is literally a plethora of options for these four individuals. They can move almost anywhere else in the City of Boston and not have to deal with noise from a 24 hour eatery. Please do not punish the night owls of Boston but forcing the south Street Diner to close at 2AM. The desires of an extremely small minority should not cause the many patrons of the South Street Diner to lose their only 24 hour restaurant option.

The four individuals petitioning the city have options, the patrons of the South Street diner do not.

Forcing the South Street Diner to close at 2 AM would be a great disservice to all Bostonians (except the aforementioned 4), and potentially discriminatory against those of us who keep late hours, whether for business, pleasure, or necessity.

Thank you for your careful consideration of the issue.

Best regards,

Adam Pieniazek
